Seller controllable return rate (SCRR) what counts, what it costs, how to dispute it

Amazon's SCRR on amazon.in: which returns count, the formula, what a high rate does to visibility, STEP, refunds and claims, the monthly window for non-returnable items, and how to dispute a charge.

    What SCRR is

SCRR stands for seller controllable return rate. It measures orders that came back, or that Amazon refunded, because of a product-related problem that Amazon treats as yours to control: the customer got a defective or damaged product, had size or fit trouble, found the quality below expectation, was misled by incomplete or inaccurate listing information, or received an incompatible product.

Source: Amazon Seller Central, Seller Controllable Return Rate (SCRR) (amazon.in, read October 2026).

This page covers amazon.in. Amazon writes the non-returnable refund rules separately for FBA and Seller Flex, and for Easy Ship and Self-Ship, with the same questions and answers, so the page treats them together. Amazon's FBA reimbursement FAQ words the definition a little differently, as returns due to product quality issues over your shipped units in a category, so use the formula on the SCRR page itself as the reference.

    Which returns count

Amazon groups the return reasons it counts into these categories:

    • Damaged, including damage from inappropriate packaging.
    • Defective, including "does not work properly" and a dead battery.
    • Incompatible with the buyer's intended use or existing system.
    • Missing or broken parts, accessories, paperwork or promised certification.
    • Poor quality, including performance below expectation.
    • Product not as described, including different from the photo or material.
    • Received the wrong item.
    • Style not as expected.
    • Size too small or too large.

Two kinds of return are left out: those caused by delivery handled by Amazon, and those where the customer simply changed their mind.

Source: Amazon Seller Central, Seller Controllable Return Rate (SCRR) (amazon.in, read October 2026).

Amazon's table also links each reason to the help page it thinks addresses it, for example packaging, preventing defects, improving the product detail page, preventing wrong items or creating a size chart.

    How it is calculated

SCRR is a percentage: orders returned, or refunded by Amazon for non-returnable items, because of product-related issues, divided by total shipped orders, whichever channel delivered them. Amazon's example is 10 such orders out of 100 shipped, an SCRR of 10%.

Source: Amazon Seller Central, Seller Controllable Return Rate (SCRR) (amazon.in, read October 2026).

Here is the same arithmetic on made-up numbers. A seller ships 200 orders in a period. 14 come back as damaged, defective or not as described, and 6 more come back because the customer changed their mind. SCRR is 14 divided by 200, which is 7%. The 6 change-of-mind returns do not count.

For non-returnable products Amazon uses the same idea, counted per product and per category, and only non-returnable orders go into the category figure.

Your target is not anyone else's

Amazon says the benchmark differs between sellers because it depends on category, item price and condition. If you sell in more than one category, the target is blended by how your orders are spread across them. Amazon's own example: if the apparel benchmark is 20% and the smartphone benchmark is 10%, a seller with five orders of each has a 15% benchmark, and one with two apparel and eight smartphone orders has 12%. Do not compare your rate with another seller's.

What a high rate costs you

SCRR is not only a number on a dashboard. Amazon's pages tie it to several things:

    • Visibility. A high SCRR can affect your Featured Offer eligibility and the overall visibility of your products. Amazon says this happens when SCRR on a listing is significantly higher than the average for other listings in its category.
    • STEP level. SCRR is one of the metrics on Amazon's STEP programme page, shown with 35 points. Asked whether a seller who misses only SCRR can get a one-time exemption to move up a STEP level, Amazon answers that you must meet every metric threshold.
    • Refunds charged back (non-returnable items). When Amazon refunds a buyer for a defect on a non-returnable item, it may charge you the refund if the defect is controllable by you. You are not reimbursed for such refunds, and reimbursement already paid may be clawed back.
    • Reimbursement (FBA). Amazon says your account is ineligible for buyer-damage reimbursement when the buyer's return is for a seller-controllable reason.
    • SAFE-T. A SAFE-T claim on an item that was returned with a seller-controllable reason gets no SCRR exemption. For non-returnable items whose refund is charged as SCRR, Amazon also says SAFE-T and reimbursement claims are ordinarily declined.

An SCRR return is the one return Amazon is least likely to pay you back for.

For how SAFE-T works on the returns you can claim, see the SAFE-T claims guide.

The monthly window for non-returnable items

For non-returnable products Amazon evaluates SCRR over a month. It reviews the orders shipped from the 16th of one month to the 15th of the next, and counts SCRR refunds paid against those orders up to the end of the second month. Amazon may also re-evaluate over 7 or 15 days, and says it will tell you first.

Scroll the diagram sideways to see all of it.

Amazon's own example dates for the monthly window, drawn to scale. The page's example is dated 2021, but the rule is the 16th to the 15th, with refunds counted to the end of the second month. This is Amazon's rule for non-returnable products only.

Amazon evaluates the category level first, then the product (ASIN) level, for categories that were not charged. You are charged only if your rate is above the respective target, and never twice for the same refund. Amazon says the results appear in the Custom Business Report within 7 days of the period maturing, and that it emails you and uploads the order details when it charges you.

    Returnable items

Amazon's monthly window is written for non-returnable products. The help pages do not give the same window for returnable ones, so we do not state one.

    Where to see it

Amazon's help pages say the Voice of the Customer dashboard shows the SCRR of each product for the last 30 days. In the current Seller Central, Voice of the Customer is a sub-tab under Account health, Manage account health. We have not confirmed what it shows for SCRR there, and Amazon's help text sends you to the Custom Business Report for the assessment results, which we have not located in the new layout either.

To see the returns behind the rate, Amazon points FBA sellers to the FBA customer returns report. In Seller Central it is under Supply chain, then Supply chain reports, in the Customer Concessions group. Amazon's help text says you can view an order-level summary online or download every return in a date range. For seller-fulfilled orders, returns are under Orders, then Manage returns.

    Bringing it down

Amazon's own advice is short: check items for defects before they ship, give an accurate and detailed product description, and show sizes with a size chart. For non-returnable items it also names high-quality packaging and dunnage.

The rest of this section is our reading of Amazon's reason list, not an Amazon rule. The reasons that dominate your own returns tell you which fix to make first:

    • Many damaged returns: look at packaging before anything else.
    • Many defective or missing-part returns: add a check before dispatch.
    • Many not-as-described or wrong-size returns: fix the listing, photos or size chart.
    • Many wrong-item returns: look at picking and labelling.

The returns evidence checklist covers what to photograph on a returned unit. Those photographs also help if you ever need to dispute a charge.

    Disputing a charge

If you want to dispute an SCRR refund charge, Amazon says to use the Contact us tool in Seller Central. You can show that you followed buyer-friendly practices, such as high-quality packaging, dunnage and quality products. Amazon is explicit that it is your responsibility to prove the quality issue is not attributable to you, and it reviews the appeal under its own policies.

Plan for the proof before you need it

Because the burden is on you, the evidence has to exist before the charge arrives: photographs of the packed item, the packaging, and the returned unit. The pages we read give no deadline for this appeal, so raise it as soon as you see the charge.

    Where Unilytic fits

Unilytic does not calculate SCRR, and it does not read your SCRR or your target from Seller Central. It does sync the return reason Amazon records on FBA customer returns and on seller-fulfilled returns, and it lines returns up against refunds and claims. That is useful for spotting which products keep coming back, but the rate and the target are Amazon's to compute.

See the FBA reimbursement guide for what Amazon pays on FBA returns.

    Questions sellers ask

What is the seller controllable return rate (SCRR) on Amazon India?

SCRR is the share of your shipped orders that were returned, or refunded by Amazon for non-returnable items, because of a product-related issue: a defective or damaged item, size and fit, quality below expectation, inaccurate listing information, or an incompatible product. Amazon calculates it as those orders divided by total shipped orders, whichever channel delivered them.

    What is a good SCRR?

Amazon's pages give no single number. Your target depends on your categories, item price and condition, and is blended by how your orders are spread across categories. Look at the target Amazon shows for your own account.

Which returns are not counted in SCRR?

Amazon says returns caused by delivery handled by Amazon, and returns because the customer changed their mind, are not counted.

Can I claim reimbursement or SAFE-T for an SCRR return?

Not ordinarily. Amazon says a SAFE-T claim on an item returned for a seller-controllable reason gets no SCRR exemption, and that for refunds charged as SCRR it will ordinarily decline SAFE-T and reimbursement claims and may claw back reimbursements already paid. For FBA, Amazon says an account is ineligible for buyer-damage reimbursement when the return is for a seller-controllable issue.

How can I dispute an SCRR refund charge?

Amazon says to use the Contact us tool in Seller Central and show that you followed buyer-friendly practices such as good packaging, dunnage and product quality. Amazon puts the burden on you to prove the quality issue is not attributable to you, and reviews appeals under its own policies.

    Does Unilytic calculate my SCRR?

No. Unilytic does not calculate SCRR or read it from Seller Central. It does sync the return reason Amazon records on FBA customer returns and on seller-fulfilled returns.

SCRR is the return metric a seller can do something about, and it is the one that turns up later as a charge, a lower STEP level or a refused claim. This page is built from Amazon's own help pages, so it gives you the rules and the formula, not a typical rate. Your target is set by Amazon for your account.
